This is a non-invasive diagnostic method that magnifies the structure of the epidermis, basal membrane, and papillary dermis using optical devices. It is also called dermatoscopy, epiluminescence microscopy, and skin surface microscopy. The method is short and efficient, but it must be performed by a specially licensed physician or a dermatologist.
Dermoscopy is important for the early detection of melanoma, but it is also used for differentiating between melanocytic (nevi, melanoma) and non-melanocytic changes (skin cancers, vascular changes, dermatofibroma), i.e., benign from malign changes on the skin. Also, it enables regular monitoring with photo-documentation of nevi and early detection of minimal, early changes on the nevi in patients with many dysplastic nevi (syndroma naevi dysplastici). Besides providing physicians with precise test results, digital dermoscopy also minimizes the unnecessary excision of benign changes and increases the trust and safety of the patients.
