Scarring

Scarring is formed to substitute normal skin after an injury and is a natural part of the healing process. Scares are initially red in colour and the size is dependent on the wound. Over time, scarring will become white in colour and look silvery in appearance.

Scar tissue is made up of collagen, the same protein that it replaces however, the fibre configuration is different. Instead of a basket weave like formation that is found in normal tissue, the collagen in scar tissue is cross linked and aligns in a single direction. Sweat glands and hair follicles will never return to scar tissue.
