Melasma, otherwise known as Chloasma, is a skin condition that involves a person experiencing brown patches on the face. Melasma can primarily be found on the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin.
Melasma can be a condition that is seen in any race, age or gender, however, it is most common in women and those with a darker skin tone and frequent exposure to the sun. Melasma is known to improve in the winter climates and then show itself again when the skin is subjected to UV rays.
There are many factors that contribute to the occurrence of Melasma. The condition can be hereditary however, pregnancy, medications and cosmetics can result in the surfacing of Melasma.
The most common way to avoid the condition is to avoid consistent exposure to the sun and wear a high factor sunscreen.
