Cellulite

Cellulite

Cellulite is a condition in which the skin sees areas of underlying fat deposits that distort the tissues beneath the skin, presenting a lumpy appearance. The occurrence of cellulite is more common in women than men due to the variation in the way the fat, muscle and connective tissues are distributed in the skin. Cellulite will affect up to 90% of women at some point in their lives.

There are four different types of cellulite:

  • Grade 1 sees no visible sign of the condition, even when the skin is pinched.
  • Grade 2 sees no visible sign of cellulite whilst standing or sitting. However, an orange peel texture is revealed once the skin is pinched.
  • Grade 3 is identified when a person is standing; however, it may disappear once sitting.
  • Grade 4 is when cellulite is visible when a person is both standing and sitting.

Cellulite appears in areas that experience the least amount of circulation and is therefore most common in the hips, thighs and buttocks. There are many factors that contribute to the cause of cellulite including hormones, diet, and genetics.
